Operating under the assumption set forth by numerous studies indicating that endurance training boosts the number of neurons in various sections of the brain, scientists set out to investigate whether improvements in cognition were initiated by the brain or perhaps by some other area of the body stimulated by exercise.
Considering that most people perform better on cognitive tests after physical fitness training, researchers proposed that one possibility could be that improvements in cognition may be initiated by muscular triggers activating cellular activity in the brain, thus leading to improvements in overall cognition.
To test the hypothesis, researchers utilized two specialized drugs shown to induce similar changes in sedentary animals' muscles that exercise typically causes in physically active test subjects.
