Prescription drug abusers are difficult to profile according to research presented by a group of college sophomores and juniors at Keene State College.
The group offered their presentation, titled "Prescription Drug Abuse: A Significant Problem in the Monadnock Region," at the college's 12th Annual Academic Excellence Conference.
According to their findings, the most commonly abused drugs on college campuses are opioid receptor blockers, which include methadone and suboxone, often prescribed to opiate addicts to help minimize the effects of substance abuse withdrawal; as well as "academic enhancers," such as the prescription drugs Ritalin and Adderall, which are typically used to treat ADHD.
The group's research points out that many drug abusers are considered "functional addicts" fitting no clear profile to help identify them.
