First reported in the China Daily, students along with the aid of their teachers at a Chinese high school known as Hubei Xiaogan No 1 in the central Hubei province utilized an amino acid supplement IV drip as they aimed to dramatically increase their cognitive performance in critical upcoming university entrance exams. Students, teachers, and parents believed the supplements would give them energy and improve memory.
Allegedly, IV bags were rigged inside classrooms and study halls. Parents went so far as to ask the high school's administrators to provide additional IVs for their children after noticing that students appeared physically exhausted from studying. Concern grew among some students at the high school when several claimed to have been aided in taking the amino acid IV repeatedly beginning years prior as they were encouraged to do so by faculty and staff.
The Chinese State Food and Drug Administration recently issued a warning about the misuse of certain excessive supplementation practices, and stressed that good rest, proper nutrition, and relaxation would be more useful to students preparing for exams.
